    In 1819, Thomas Jefferson, who had attended the College of William and Mary 60 years earlier, wrote his recommended diet for students at the soon-to-be University of Virginia, both food and beverages. When it came to the latter, he wrote, “their drink at all times water, a young stomach needing no stimulating drinks, and the habit of using them being dangerous,”
